Venom A-Z Z is for Zinc metalloproteinase

Venom A-Z Z is for Zinc metalloproteinase – a family of molecules such as Acutolysin found in the venom of Deinagkistrodon acutus.  Generally these venoms have haemolytic effects such as the inhibition of platelet aggregation and in D.acutus this is highly specific and effective.  These metalloproteinases are found across a wide range of pit viper species are responsible for the necrotic effects of their bites.
